Key Highlights
Matt kicked off by reminding attendees that cybersecurity is not just an IT issue; it’s a company-wide responsibility. Drawing from real-life CPA tech horror stories, he illustrated how phishing emails, ransomware, and human error can cripple accounting firms both financially and personally.
From there, Matt outlined five quick cybersecurity wins every firm should prioritize:
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) across all accounts and systems.
Implement email and website filtering to block phishing attempts before they reach your inbox.
Use a secure password manager instead of storing credentials in spreadsheets.
Keep systems up to date because outdated software is an open door for hackers.
Invest in cybersecurity awareness training to make every team member your first line of defense.
He also emphasized the importance of regular self-assessments, written security plans (WISP), and compliance with IRS Publication 4557 and the FTC Safeguards Rule, especially for firms handling sensitive taxpayer data.
Why It Matters for Your Firm
With 95% of breaches involving human error and nearly half of all cyberattacks targeting small businesses, proactive cybersecurity isn’t optional; it’s essential. As Matt put it, “Cybersecurity is a company issue, not just an IT issue.”
